Frequently Asked Questions

The sale price = original price x (1 - discount/100). For example, 25% off a $200 item: $200 x (1 - 0.25) = $200 x 0.75 = $150. The amount saved is $200 - $150 = $50. This tool also calculates the reverse: if you know the sale price and the discount percentage, it finds the original price using: original = sale price / (1 - discount/100).
A stacked discount applies two separate discounts sequentially rather than adding them together. For example, a 25% discount followed by a further 10% discount does not equal 35% off. It equals: 100% - (75% x 90%) = 100% - 67.5% = 32.5% off total. This is important to understand when multiple promotional codes are applied, or when an employee discount is applied on top of a sale price.
If an item is on sale for $150 after a 25% discount, the original price is $150 / (1 - 0.25) = $150 / 0.75 = $200. This reverse calculation is available in Mode 2 of this tool. It is useful when you see a sale price and want to know what the item cost originally, or when checking whether a claimed discount is accurate.
Percentage off = ((original price - sale price) / original price) x 100. For example, if something was $80 and is now $60: ((80 - 60) / 80) x 100 = (20/80) x 100 = 25% off. You can use this to verify whether advertised discounts are calculated correctly or to compare deals across different retailers.
The same formula applies. To find the pre-tax price from a price including VAT: pre-tax price = total price / (1 + VAT rate/100). For example, a $120 item with 20% VAT has a pre-tax price of $120 / 1.2 = $100. To add VAT to a price: final price = pre-tax x (1 + VAT/100).

Free Discount Calculator Online — Find Sale Price, Savings and Original Price

Calculating discounts accurately is essential for savvy shopping, retail pricing, and business finance. Whether you are a consumer trying to verify that a claimed discount is accurate, a retailer setting promotional pricing, a purchasing manager comparing vendor quotes, or a student working through business mathematics, the Discount Calculator on OneDocPDF handles all common discount scenarios instantly. Mode 1 finds the sale price and amount saved from an original price and percentage off. Mode 2 reverses the calculation to find the original price from a known sale price and discount rate. The stacked discount feature shows the true total saving when two discounts are applied in sequence.

Understanding the difference between stacked discounts and additive discounts is particularly important for business purchasing and retail finance. When a supplier offers 30% off list price and you also have a further 10% loyalty discount, the combined saving is not 40%. It is 30% + (10% of the remaining 70%) = 30% + 7% = 37%. The stacked result is always less than the sum of the individual percentages unless one discount is zero. This tool shows both the sequential application result and the equivalent single discount percentage for clarity.
