Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60: (45/60) x 100 = 75%. Mode 2 of this calculator performs this calculation. Simply enter the part (X) and the total (Y) to find the percentage. This is commonly used for test scores, survey results, financial ratios, and performance metrics.
Percentage change = ((new value - old value) / old value) x 100. For example, from 80 to 100: ((100-80)/80) x 100 = 25% increase. From 100 to 80: ((80-100)/100) x 100 = -20% decrease. Mode 3 shows whether the change is an increase or decrease and the magnitude. Percentage change is used in finance for price movements, in science for experimental changes, and in business for KPI tracking.
Percentage increase measures relative change from a baseline. Percentage of total measures a part relative to a whole. For example, if sales grew from 100 to 125, the percentage increase is 25%. If sales of product A were 125 out of total sales of 500, then product A represents 25% of total sales. These are two completely different calculations despite using the same numbers.
To add a percentage: result = base x (1 + percentage/100). For example, adding 15% to 200: 200 x 1.15 = 230. To subtract: result = base x (1 - percentage/100). Subtracting 15% from 200: 200 x 0.85 = 170. Mode 4 handles this calculation. Note that adding 20% and then subtracting 20% does not return the original value: 100 x 1.2 = 120, then 120 x 0.8 = 96, not 100.
Divide the final value by (1 + percentage/100). For example, if a price is $115 after adding 15% VAT, the pre-VAT price is $115 / 1.15 = $100. This reverse calculation is also handled by our dedicated Discount Calculator for sale price scenarios.

Percentage calculations appear in virtually every field: financial analysis, academic grading, scientific research, business reporting, cooking, medicine, and everyday consumer decisions. The Percentage Calculator on OneDocPDF provides four calculation modes covering every common percentage scenario: finding a percentage of a number, finding what percentage one number is of another, calculating percentage change between two values, and adding or subtracting a percentage from a base value. Each mode operates independently so you can use whichever suits your immediate need without navigating between tools.

Understanding percentage change is particularly critical in financial contexts. When an investment drops 50%, it needs a 100% gain to return to the original value — not 50%. This asymmetry is explained by the percentage change formula, which uses the original value as the denominator. A stock that falls from $100 to $50 has dropped 50%, but it must double from $50 to $100, which is a 100% gain. Financial analysts, investors, and business owners who do not understand this asymmetry can significantly misinterpret financial performance data.
